Need help please, with Dreamweaver MX2004

Our website has been functional for 2 years now, without any major problems.

However, I have a problem which I cannot seem to solve now. When I open the files window (F8), and try and connect to the remote host I do not see my remote files. I've tried "refresh" and I still cannot see my remote files.
When I select any local file (unchanged since last upload to remote server) and "synchronize" it with file on the remote server, Dreamweaver tells me the file needs to be uploaded! Its not like the files on the remote server have been deleted, because I can still access and browse my website (even after emptying the cache).
