Chapter 12 database error
Hi
While working on the login with restricted access from the database in Chapter 12, everything seemed to work fine...making and testing the connection string etc. Then when I tried it out I got an error: "unrecognized database format". I have Access 97 on this machine (under Win2000 Pro) so I tried to open TheSoccerSite.mdb with that and got the same error. I used Access 2003 on another machine to convert TheSoccerSite.mdb to Access 97 format but again got the same error. Even though I didn't think the folder/mdb permissions would give this error, I messed about with them for awhile and then redid the Access 97 conversion. Now everything works fine...but I don't know what the problem was to begin with?? Any ideas? Thanks! Rick F.

Hmmm, indeed this is odd.
Like we said in the book, you should be able to open the Access 2000 database on WIndows 2000. Even though you have a copy of Access 97, the drivers to open a 2000 database should be present.
What happens when you try to connect to the 2000 database from the ASP application and Dreamweaver without converting it to a 97 format? That should work, provided you set the correct security permissions.....

The error I got when using the Access 2000 database from the ASP application was that "unrecognized database format" error embedded in the returned web page that reported the error. I didn't see why converting it to Access 97 would work but given the same error report when I tried to open the Access 2000 db with Access 97 I thought it was worth a try. However, now that things are working I have again copied the original Access 2000 db back into the site folder and it also works fine...so evidently fixing the problem had more to do with me futzing around with the permissions than the 2000 to 97 conversion. But why does it give you that report of "unrecognized database format" when it is a permissions problem thus sending me on a wild goose chase. That is a rhetorical question...I should know better than to ask. Aarrgh! Thanks much for your help. RF

Looks like one of those inscrutable error messages of Microsoft.
Yet it doesn't make sense. Unrecognized database format does seem to indicate a problem with the version; and not just another cryptic error message.
I asked Google about the "unrecognized database format" error message, but it seems that most stuff has to do with an incorrect format, or a corrupted database.
Odd, very odd. Glad it does work now.
Having fun with TheSoccerSite??

I am now!
Actually I am learning a lot from the book and having such easy access to one of the authors is a treat...even though the projects are so well done I haven't needed your help until now. Good work!
regards, RF
