Default DOM PS C++

I found out JavaScript is a big topic in its own right!
The JavaScript Bible by Goodman (5th ed.) helped me to understand the W3C DOM. An object -!- whose methods and variables JavaScript manipulates to change the appearance (and information) on a HTML webpage.
I wonder if Java has access to the browser's document object model to change the contents of it. Or are we confined to the area of an applet's width and height?

Francis

P.S. Today I stumbled into another book by Ivor Horton: Beginning Visual C++ 6, which was on discount -$12!- in the American Bookstore in the Hague.
Because I spend the last half year of my short life in his Beginning Java 2, I could not resist the offer.
I want to be a web author, client-side that is. I heard Active-X controls have major safety problems. I think I should avoid them. Any suggestions?
