Default Writing code on a Mac

Hi all,

Hope you can help, I'm completely new to this.

I am trying to follow the book but I will writing code on my MacBook Pro. Is text edit good enough to write the code and can I check it in Safari as well as Firefox??

So far I am at page 7, on the first exercise "painting the document red" and cannot get it to execute. Any help is appreciated. Thx
