Default Chapter 23 chapter23.xml and TOMCAT

Issue - TOMCAT apps won't list my chapter23.xml as an application.
ISBN (0-....-7485-.) / page 758 / 3rd paragraph from the bottom.
================================================== ==================
My issue is with this book's chapter 23 example:
I was able to store the said file 'chapter23.xml' in the directory :
<Tomcat Installation Directory>/con/Catalina/localhost and I also lucked out when Tomcat Manager actually saw the application - WOW I thought.
The app however did not work due to jdbc url issues - I may post that problem too as I can access the mysql server and tables using Java.

So since I was learning, I 'Undeployed' the chapter23 application.
Now I can not repeat the success. Tomcat refuses to see my chapter23.xml file.

Action taken so far on this issue:
I had a internet chat with Mark at wrox about this, and was told to post to the P2P forum for an engineer to monitor any posting related to this wrox material.
I can also send an email with screenshots as well to anyone interested.

Background on my path to the web:
My Goal :
Create my own webpage using Tomcat/ANT//MYSQL/Eclipse/Java/Javaserver pages as my Actors.

To that end I am learning by mucking about with WEB Apps with Tomcat, while at the same time referencing this Book's examples.
I am an experienced application builder - just not with web architecture.
