Default problem in coding with ndbm library

hi all
has any one managed to run the codes of the book which include the library ndbm in Debian?
I have compiled it in ubuntu but in Debian 4.0 there is no package named ndbm-dev and of course after compiling I get an error message
ndbm-gdbm.h : no such file or directory

Try compiling with -lgdbm_compat -lgdbm
That is what I had to do on gentoo system
