Linux Installation
the book eulogises open source, yet does not provide instructions on how to install the three programs under Linux, which I think is a major drawback.
Has anybody installed PHP, Apache and MySQL under Linux? If so, could they point me in the right direction for choice of directories/files etc and where to record them so that they are picked up?
I should say that I am new to Linux and PHP etc, but would like to get to grips with them. Consequently, I would be grateful if any response to this request assumed I knew nothing about Linux but am OK with Windows.

Have you looked at any of the Appendices at all? I *know* there's linux install instructions in there.
Check Appendix I, about page 672.

Thanks Jason. You seem to be a busy lad!
I have 7.3 SUSE Linux and it seems that all the software I want is there, but it is confusing when I followed the process in the book to find that it did not work. As there were so many file options I could have changed, I did not want to change the wrong one, so sent the note out in frustration. It is further complicated in that my Linux PC does not have internet access for downloading files, so I think I skipped over Appendix I for that reason. However, I will try and find the files in the appropriate directories and see what happens.
I find that most books take you so far and then what they suggest does not work, but no clues are given as to why not.
Thanks again for pointing out what is fairly obvious.
Kind Regards
Tony Konieczny

Well, let me know what you end up with. The *nix instructions in Appendix I are general enough that they should work with all/most linux, bsd, OSX, etc...
Also, I don't know what version they're at, but a fallback option might be to use whatever apache/php/mysql is in YaST (?? is that what it's called in SuSE?--I'm a Gentoo/FreeBSD user personally) There might be a version that's adequate to run the book code (off top of my head, you're looking for Apache 2.0.x, PHP >= 4.3.0 and MySQL 4.0.x)
