Anyone added a mailing notification to the Forum

I was planning on adding an email notification for users wanting to know if other users have replied to a forum topic that they have subscribed to.

So far I've thought about building the mailing list program in chapter 13 and building a link to it from the discussion group. This might be the only way to do it, but it seems to me to be a little excessive, and I was wondering, before I go and re-invent the wheel if anyone else has managed to come up with a simple way to implement this.
