No I never noticed that! I don't know why... now that I've actually read that manual page a few problems I've had in the past make more sense! I can see it now.
I almost went with doing single quotes as my primary quoting mechanism (with the false understanding), so that I could use double quotes without escaping in HTML output, but then I ran the w3c validator and it didn't mind if I used single or double either one in my XHTML markup.. so I went with using singles there and doubles as the greater container. I understand what you're saying though, in shaving off resource usage by using the less sophisticated string parsing mechanism. I will keep that in mind!
