Default Chapter 3: Try It Out p51

I am in between Steps 8 & 9 which read: 8. In the Change Data Source dialog box, select Microsoft Access Database File and then click OK to be returned to the Add Connection dialog box. 9. In the Add Connection dialog box, click the Browse button and navigate to the samples folder for Microsoft office. ...

In step 8 I select Microsoft Access Database File and it indeed returns me to the Add Connection dialog box, but there is no browse button. There is a Connection String field which buttons below labeled: Test Connection, OK, Cancel. If I click the Test Connection button it reads Test connection succeeded. If I click the OK button I get an error that reads Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0. If I click the Cancel button I wind-up back at the Choose Your Data Connection in the wizard.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

I have 2 other computers at my beckon. One of them seems to function exactly as I've described. The other works as desired. I know my boss' computer works as desired also.

What is my computer (and 1 other computer) missing that my boss (and 1 other computer) has?

I am lost and have no idea.

Do you have Microsoft Access installed on your computer? I just retraced the steps and have no problems so this is the only thing that I can think of right off hand. If you do have Microsoft Access installed, what version is it compared to the other computers?

Thanks for the reply Thearon.

I have Access 2002. One of the computer that this works on also has Access (don't know what version - I don't have access {no pun intended} to it at the moment - I'd assume it's the same version).

The other 2 computers do not have access installed on them (1 of which works and the other does not).

For kicks I did a search for the msjet dll to see if maybe one was running 3.5 and the other 4, but both seem to have similar dll stuff on them.

Any help I'd really appreciate.

THANKS!

I think the problem you may have is connected to a missing registry entry that can be deleted if you have used any type of registry cleaning software. If you still have the connection problem and have no fear about editing your registry then I would suggest you look at this link.

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...eID=1&PageID=2

Towards the bottom of the page is the info you'll need to add to the registry.

Good Luck

That was it exactly. Once I put that registry value in, it worked! Thanks for finding that for me.

I am humbly indebted to you.
