Default Bluetooth chat crashes on startup

I tried running the Bluetooth chat on my phone and the AVD, and in both cases I only get an ominous "The application has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." error message and the phone or AVD forces it to close.
I double checked everything to make my java file, main.xml, and manifest all match what's in the book. As for running the thing, the phone I use is an LG Optimus S running Android 2.2.1, and for the AVD I've tried using Android 2.1 and 2.2. For no apparent reason I can't set it to Android 2.0 to see if that would make a difference because that option isn't showing up and show up even after I install every last available package.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
