Default Chapter 12 Artificial Horizon?? issue

I successfully compiled the "Chapter 12 Artificial Horizon" project on both of my devices.

Smartphone Android (2.3.2) 9
Tablet Motorola XOOM 2 Android (3.2) 13

When both devices are lying flat on the table (smartphone in landscape orientation) both display the same Azimuth(bearing)reading.

But I wasn't expecting to see the "horizon" displayed when looking down!!

I would expect the horizon to appear when raising(increasing the pitch) and to be central in the display when holding the devices in front of my face ( 90 degrees to the ground ).

I haven't altered any of the code.

Can anybody explain why the horizon isn't where I expect it to be?
