Default [newbie]network-related or instance-specific error occurred

I'm trying to use memberships using one of the examples in the book, however, when running the code snippet I get the following error:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I've checked that remote connections is enabled from the Surface Area Configuration tool, and, I can successfully connect to the database from another computer (e.g. using VS2008 and adding a connector).

The database is not being created within the App_Code folder, because there seems to be a time out
when connecting to the database.

Any ideas?

NOTE: It would be nice to have a way to add attachments to the forum I guess.

Is your user data within the DEV01\JOEY database specified in the ConnectionStrings section? If so you should change the membership provider to use connectionStringName="ConnectionString".
It currently uses connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" which is the built-in default connection when you install ASP.NET and points to a server named .\SQLEXPRESS
