Default Assembler for this book?

Before I bought this book, I already knew an inkling of Assembly language. However, I found that what I already knew was incompatible with this book. I know:

mov ax, 0

This book would say

movl $0, %eax

This wasn't going to be a problem until I realized it wasn't compatible with my compiler. No matter how much I tweaked, it didn't work. I figured out that the compiler that would work best for this book is GAS. But I can't find a download for it ANYWHERE. I must have combed through half the internet looking for a download. BUT THERE WEREN'T ANY. Does anybody know where I can download GAS or another assembler compatible with this book? Thanks in advance.

I like it in here,
My little hole.
I don't have to see pain and starvation, so why should I?
War exists only on TV.
It doesn't affect me, so why should I care?
200$ can buy a livelihood for a starving family in Africa or this week's groceries. Which do you think I'll choose?
I see my SUV every day, so it's more important than the 4000 hungry children who leave us per hour.
I don't see the millions of chickens held in cages too small to accommadate their bodies, serving no purpose except to lay eggs on a conveyor belt until they outlive their usefulness, at which point they are slaughtered for meat, so it doesn't matter.
I like my little hole. I call it Money.

Default

If you're using Linux, you probably already have GAS. The executable is named "as". If you are running Windows, you can download a C/C++ compiler suite that includes GAS at http://www.mingw.com. Once again, the executable will be named "as.exe".
Hope this helps.
