Default The ajax in this is terrible, why use it?

After playing round with the ajax update functions it has some strange behaviours on the live server, I tested it in Wamp and all ok, as soon as I move it onto linux server it really doesn't work. Its ajax so why is there a difference in environments?

After some testing it does the following:

ie7-9 completely reloads the page.
firefox- only works on second attempt
safari - well, test it for yourself as absolutely nothing happens at all...

So any suggestions please Mr Myer?
