Northwind database
hello,
on page 93, the northwind database is needed to complete the passing database logon info exercise. the book states that this database ships with sql server. i've searched my hard drive for this database and it's not there. i put the vs.net install cd in to see if sql server was something that wasn't installed initially, but did not see such an option.
my question is how do i get a copy of this database and when i get it, what is the full path for where it should be stored?
i think it's very unfair to use something that isn't installed by default and then not even tell the reader where and how to get it.
thank you.

Hi there,
Did you install a full version of SQL Server, or did you install the MSDE (Desktop Engine).
AFAIK, both the Pubs as the Northwind database are installed in a SQL Server installation, but not in a MSDE installation.

In addition to the above, you can download the scripts for the sample databases at the Microsoft site from the following location:

hello, i checked out this link. it seems as though i need to install one of the products you mentioned in the previous email, just to be able to use the access database.
do you know if this is the same northwinds database that comes with ms office? if so, i have that already installed. can i use that version of the database? if so, is there anything that i need to do?
my goal is to determine if the exercises in this book are suitable to use for an online class that i am creating. my major concern is that if type of issue is happening in chapter 3, there is no telling what other obstacles i (or the students) will run into trying to work through the exercises in the remaining chapters.
i am starting to think that this book is really for people that already know vs.net, vb.net and crystal.
i thank you for your help.

If you installed SQL Server with VS.NET, you most likely installed the MSDE version of SQL Server.
The download I pointed you to contains a .sql script for the Northwind database which you can run against your MSDE installation. I am not sure about licensing issues, but since the database is distributed with so many other installations, I wouldn't be surprised if you could just use it.
Just to be safe, you could also download the 120 trial version of SQL Server which comes with a Northwind database at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/

I guess that's why they called it Professional Crystal Reports for VS.NET ;)

Imar;
I think the book is excellent, however, Indera is probably refering to Northwind as an Access database. I do not believe that he has installed SQL Server or MSDE.
is this the case?

I hate so much when people post offtopic. That guy only asked for a link to download the northwind database, not all the bullshiet that you all wrote there. If you don't know the f***ing answer, just don't f***ing post!
I found this post seeking for the same lynk, and that means that I am not a usual posted on this forum. So, if you aswer me here, I wont read it, since I wont go back here.
