Default unable to drag objects into form viewer

I'm new to both Crystal Reports and .NET, but trying to follow along with the examples in the book in spite of that. I actually got as far as page 72 before I encountered a problem: after I created a copy of the international sales report, I was unable to insert a crosstab into this copy - the box appears over my cursor, but left-clicking merely makes the box disappear. Now, apparently, I can't drag any objects whatsoever into the form viewer...not even in the original solution.
I'm using VS .NET 2003 on XP Pro and downloaded the hotfix (version 9.2.2.x) that's supposed to cure the functionality issues associated with running Crystal Reports in .NET 2003, but to no avail. I'm not sure whether this problem is associated with those functionality issues.
