Default Retain state of a tree like collapsible structure

Hi All
I have a HTML page on left side of which i have a tree like collapsible structure(for Menu). the element of that tree are all hyperlinks. When I click on any of these links, next page loads having same tree structure again for this page also. All the corresponding links have this main menu structure and this is not a seperate frame. It is in same frame. I can not use frames.
Now if i goes to next screen by clicking any of the links in that left side menu, I should retain the state of that tree structure in the next screen also.
e.g. If i have 3 links on that menu and i have 4 sublinks under each of links. If i have opened the first main category and clicked at one sublink of first main category, in the next screen also this selected category of links should be displayed in the same way(the first main category open and the rest two categories closed.)

If any one has an idea, please let me know. It is urgent.
Thanks
Inder jeet Singh
