I've been working through this book but I've been completely confused by the eventual consistency example:

"R is the number of nodes to be read from
W is the number of nodes written to
N is the total number of nodes in the cluster"

How can R + W ever be > N?

I figured this out shortly after I posted it; since reads and writes are not mutually exclusive, a node can support reading, writing or both. So there are 2 operations, R + W is at most 2N.

Oh well, it was nice to be the first post in this book's forum :)
