Code Error - Chapter 1 - Adding a Property

Under the section "Adding a Property" in the first chapter, I am receiving an error:

"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /home/.../class.Demo.php on line 5".

Any suggestions on what is wrong? So frustrating to already run across errors on the second set of code.
