why extra double quote and dot ? help me !

Pls. watch out the above code and tell me why extra double quote(") and dot (.) has been used.

Its used to concatenate the successive string.
U could understand by observing the following code.

Code:

$name="Thomas";
$str="I am".$name."and u?";
echo $str;

Output:

I am Thomas and u
