Default Feature Upgrades

In chapter 5 page 118 3rd paragraph. "It recognises new settings in the feature.xml", I am currently trying to work out what those new settings need to be so I can add them to the current MOSS feature.xml as a preparation ofr in place upgarde, however, this is not explained at all in the rest of the book. Most unheplful as this clearly not covered in the chapter it is most needed. At best it provides the foundations for the brick wall I am now hitting.
