Installing Reporting Services - SSL Issue
OK - I must be doing something wrong. I keep aborting out of the installation because it thinks I want SSL and have no certificate installed. I have checked the RSReportServer.config file and the SecureConnectionLevel is set to 0.
Any dieas??

Terry,
Give me a bone.....I need more information. The config file isn't going to help you with an aborted installation. How about the install steps. What happened? What is happening now? What are you trying to do..????

Hi Todd:
Ok - I'm trying to install the evaluation copy of Reporting Services. I downloaded the package from MS and basically hit every default option. The package extract works fine. When Setup starts the installation of the Setup Support File works ok, the check of the system prerequistes works ok, registation information is ok, feature selection is ok (I took the defaults for now), ... It then starts the actual installation process. Runs for 30 seconds and then gives me an error stating "A Secure Socket Layer certificate is not avaiable on this machine.... ". Basically it says either load a certificate or change the requirements. The help text pointed me in the direction fo the RSReportingServer.config file but that hasn't helped. On the MS website, I've seen reference to a prompt that I think is supposed to come up during the installation asking about SSL however I've never seen that prompt.
All I want to do is install it and see if it is useful for what I'm trying to do.

When you said you chose every default option, one of those default options is a checkbox requiring an SSL. The box is checked by default.
Are you certain you un-checked it before the install??

Hi Sandy:
Ok - I went back to Step 1 by starting with downloading the kit from the MS web page. I re-ran the entire process and nowhere is there a prompt regarding SSL. Like I said, I saw in the documentation that there is supposed to be one but it is not there.
Not sure how these install kits work. Is possible I once left the flag checked and when the install aborted due to no SSL, it left some parameter set somewhere which is causing the later re-tries to not even ask the prompt? I am 100% sure there is no prompt being asked.

I had install issues of my own so I have done it oh, 5 or 6 times now, but I always had that check box.
Hmmm....
Does it get far enough into the install that you can actually 'un-install' or does it appear to clean up after itself and remove the files on it's own?
(I had other issues so I could un-install)
If you are able, un-install. I know that when I tried to 'reconfigure' I didn't get asked any of those questions. Perhaps if it sees files there it does (as you suggested) take settings from there.

Hi Sandy:
It does not get far enough to allow me to un-install. After the error message it apepars to try to clean up after itself.
Where exactly in the sequence of things do you see the SSL prompt? The last prompt I see before the error message is the feature selection. Is the SSL prompt before that?
Did you load the evaluation copy or a licensed version? I've seen issues with evaluation copies of other software before that doesn't show up in licensed versions.
Again, thanks for you help,
Terry

I don't recall the exact point where I was asked about the SSL unfortunately.
I am currently using the 120 day eval, although my 'real' copy came in the mail today. I am not sure how to install it, over top? Un-install first?
In your case there has to be some portions of the application remaining after it bombs. Otherwise it would ask about the SSL (unless the production version assumes one and doesn't ask). Lacking any Microsoft document that explains where everything goes I think that you need to look at finding and removing all parts of the app.
I know that there are files here:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services
and here:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Reporting Services
and here:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report Designer
I don't know what registry changes may have been made. I would check for those directories and remove them and their contents if they exist on your system. I would then look in the registry.
I wish I could be more help.
