Default Customizing the Team Explorer environment

Hello,

I am reading this book (Professional Team Foundation Server) and it explains how to use interfaces to TFS and how to customize the environment (work item for example) based on the existent fields. I would like to know if it is possible to add a work item to the view that is based not on the existent fields but on the distributed query. For example, I would like to add a query that will run a VB or C# code and get the field info for the work item from another non-TFS database. Is it also possible to add controls or links to Team Explorer view?
Any references will be appreciated.

Thanks.
Yelena
