This is Paul Galvin, principal author of Professional Workflow in SharePoint 2010.

I shall do my best to monitor and respond to questions and comments for the book!

I would greatly appreciate some clarification on the HR Onboarding example, see my posting " Chapter 3 - Missing Instructions"

Thanks.

I really enjoyed the overall format of this book and the approach that is taken to provide the examples. However, i am getting discouraged when i find the incomplete instructions and read the comments from the other readers who are having the same problems as me. Apparently WROX editors do not try to actually follow the instructions. Hopefully some errata will be issued quickly so that i can spend my precious time implementing the examples instead of rereading the same section over and over in a vain attempt to find the missing information, i.e., references to columns and lookup lists in tables that are not mentioned in the text.

I'm relieved to read that others are encountering the same issues with the book as I am. The first two chapters and first half of Chapter 3 were great, and I had high hopes for the remainder of the book, but the Detailed Technical Implementation for Chapter 3 has so many errors I gave up. I hope an errata gets issued pronto. Some examples are:
  • Page 45, Table 3-2, additional settings column for 'New Hire Task Status says it comes from a custom list created earlier. Not only can I NOT find the instructions that said to create this list, but on page 41, under 'Setup', it specifically says that we need create ONE custom list for Locations.
  • Page 43 & 45, both have tables (3-1, 3-2) that say 'New Hire Site Columns', but have different columns. Why are they listed separately?
  • Page 39, which is BEFORE 'Detailed Technical Implementation' has references to Content Types, Custom Lists, but these aren't referenced in the Detailed Section. Confusing

Default We can only hope that the authors provided a complete revision

This book needs a complete rewrite; especially in providing cogent and accurate project walk-throughs. It is really in elementary process to walk through your projects, take screen shots and review to make sure you have produced a complete and accurate description of your project. The editors at WROX need to review their own review process.

I accidently purchased two copies of this book before starting to read it, and now wonder how I can get my money back.

My advice to all is to tap these blogs before you purchase a book from any of the vendors. But WROX needs to make good on this disaster!
