Default rendering .xls Excel files

I'm currently writing an application that compiles a lot of information to PDF, including Excel files.

I was hoping to find some way of rendering an Excel spreadsheet without using Excel. Let me explain:

All the products out there that print Excel to PDF, export Excel sheets to JPEG or BMP, export Excel sheets to PDF, display Excel sheets on the monitor, etc... or in ANY way try to render an Excel sheet use Excel to do it.

In other words, no program tries to guess what the Excel sheet looks like without physically using MS Excel to tell it what the sheet looks like.

I was wondering if anyone knew an exception to this rule. Is there anything out there that can render an Excel sheet as a graphic, PDF, or anything else that does not use Excel to tell it how to draw this image?

Hi, here is one exception, this C# Excel component.
It has a really simple API and no dependency with MS Excel.

Here are the sample codes to convert excel file to a pdf in C# or to a image file format:
Code:
// Convert Excel (XLS) to PDF.
ExcelFile.Load("Workbook.xls").Save("Workbook.pdf");

// Convert Excel (XLSX) to PNG.
ExcelFile.Load("Workbook.xlsx").Save("Workbook.png");

You can modify the report server to config to customize XLSX.

Unable to find pertinent walkthrough on steps to complete.

I am having trouble with a visualforce page rendered as xls. It was working fine for a year and now it stopped. The .xls file is generated and downloaded but shows up as a blank grey background with no content. I've tried making a simple test page with the same result. I have added contentType="application/vnd.ms-excel#ifacetimeapp.xls" to the page tag to accomplish this in the past. Was something changed in the spring/summer 16 releases ?
