Default Locating n measuring component in an image

Hi,
i bought the book "GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Control Using C#" by Eric White with Chris Garrett Simon Robinson.
In the book, on page 161, it says the author took a project that remove grainess from black n whit photos.

its similar concept.. i need to locate a irregular shape such as a human palm or a key, etc, and measure the length of it. the lenght is the furthest distance between the two points of the irregular shape. but firstly, how can i locate that two points? the background of the image is black which contrast with the irregular shape.

can i have the codes to do that? desperately need help, thanks alot..

Regards,
Richard Rose
