Default Excel doc on web server

Hi all,

I have a link from ASP to an Excel spreadsheet. In the spreadsheet, I'm using External data linked to a DSN. The problem is that I want Excel to use the DSN that is set up on the web server. I thought that it would do this because I'm linking to the Excel doc from the web server.

However, it only works if the DSN is created on the client machine.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

That is correct, Excel will always look for a local DSN rather than a remote one, it may be worth looking for alternative solutions see http://www.greggriffiths.org/webdev/both/excel/ for some ideas.

You may be creating more dependencies by the way u are doing right now,
an alternative may be use recorset gather data in ASP page and export to excel using the filesystem object, no client dependencies will arrive and easy to maintain

better yet, use web queries with an asp page that serves csv data as the connection

There may be no stupid questions, but I've sure met a lot of inquisitive idiots.
