Hi guys,
I have a [potential] client asking me to do a website for him, containing the output of eight webcams.
I am to do an admin-system for him (he's not very computer-literate - so it's gotta be easy) which enables him to assign login/passwords for users, for a single camera.
For starters: I have absolutely no experience when it comes to webcams ;)
I do however have alot of coding-experience, so read on...
The building (B) containing the webcams is removed from the primary building (A), so I'm imagining a machine receiving the feeds from the cameras in this building (B), with a single network link to a machine in building A.
The machine in building A is going to act as the webserver.
To minimize the license- and hardware-costs I plan to let the machine in building B run Linux (maybe Debian), and the machine in building A run some kinda Windows (NT/2k/XP/2k3) as this will reduce the time spent on doing the primary system (login/admin/aso), as I am primarily an ASP-programmer.
Anyway, my questions are these:
Do any of you have experience connecting 8 or more webcams to a single machine and feeding the output to the web?
As stated earlier, I have no experience with webcams, what output do they produce - a series of jpgs?
Could I store these on a linuxbox running Samba and map the folder from the Windowsbox?
I've read the book "CORE PHP Programming" and given the time I can do this in PHP as well, if necessary.
Actually I'm not even sure that my line-up with a linuxbox nd a windowsbox is the right way to go, any ideas are welcome!
Note: Please bear with me: I am going to cross-post this - not extensively - only in two forums - to make sure that I reach both the Windows and the Open-Source communities...
