Default web reports that take a long time

Any idea how to handle reports that take a long time to generate? I am currently exporting to pdf and emailing the report, but some of my reports take over 4 hours to run. The web page always times out. I would think that I could create a service that my web page could call that would run until the report was done and then send the email, allowing the web page (and user) to continue on and do something else. Any better ideas or a clue how to accomplish that?

Thanks,
Dave
