Default getting the last CHAR of a string

Hi ,
I have a column with values 1",1!,1# etc. I need to get the last character and add some comments to those and place it in page footer. Can any one help me with this.
some thing like this in PF -- " = comments 1.! = comments2, # comments 3 etc
