Default Formula statement problem

Hi Guys,
I am looking for a solution to a formulas problem, hope you can help.
I am running cr8.5 on an oracle 9 server using odbc to connect.
I am trying to add a field to a subreport which ,in simple english says,
If line 2 of file a,field a is null then print line 1 of file b , field c else if line 2 of file a, field a is not null then print line 1 of file b, field c and line 2 of file a, field a.
I then need to make this a shared stringvar but I think I can do that later.
         Could somebody please help.

         Regards,

         narooma.12
