ajax in asp.net

hi,

i m new to asp.net, now i am simply developing a dynamic webpages in asp.net,nowadays i m hearing the word ajax in asp.net. what is that ?
why we want to use ajax in asp.net? where to use it?
before entering in ajax what i want to learn in asp.net?
