Greetings all & happy holidays!

I've got Dreamweaver 4 on my PC and I can't get it to switch to code view. I've pecked around in the preferences and can't seem to find the setting that's hosed.

It won't even open script pages that have to open in code view.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this.

I too have had this problem with DW 4.0. Can't switch from design view to code view with button or my menu (View->Code) or by closing and reopening DW, even rebooting computer. Even re-created the page anew. Nothing helps.

Found a forum of people with same problem but I see no definitive cures there:

Macromedia does not offer tech support any longer on vers. 4.0.

I got this response below from Macromedia. FYI, the information contained in the first link did not work for me.

I ultimately solved this problem by upgrading to DW MX2004 (vers.7.0)

Ok, this is an old thread, but just in case anyone's still running into this problem here's the solution:

1 Use the File > New command to open a new page.
2 If the window of the new page is not automatically maximized, do so by using the maximize icon.
3 Use the View > Code and Design command to view the new page.

Note: You should now be able to use the View > Code command as well as the Show Code View and Show Code and Design Views buttons with this page now.

4 If there are any pages open other than the page created in Step 1, select and close those pages FIRST before exiting Dreamweaver. Make sure the page from Step 1 is the ONLY page left open.
5 Exit from Dreamweaver. When you restart Dreamweaver, the commands and buttons for Code View should work

well this type of problem is new to me but i have never used such old version of dreamweaver

Thanks.. I was having the same problem using Dreamweaver ultradev4 and I didn't really wan't to buy a new version just to fix this. The earlier post about maximizing the window and then going to view, code and design view helped but I had to do one more thing. When I entered code and design view on a brand new page, the code section was so small I could barely see it at the top of the screen. I clickndragged this with my mouse to widen it, then closed dreamweaver and ever since it has worked. Thanks all.

Hey all, what fixed mine was the above advice plus one more step. I had to start dreamweaver, load a new page, maximize it, go to view/code and design view. Then I had to use my mouse to widen the tiny almost non-seeable code view to 1/2 the screen, then close dreamweaver. When I re-opened it and ever since it has worked.
