Hi!
Very new to Dreamweaver - using MX 2004.
I can make hot spots that open new pages or link to files. But what I want to do is to hover over parts of an image and have some explanatory text show up.

Can I achieve this relatively simply in Dreamweaver?

you can use the alt tag to show a message or javascript mixed with dhtml.
don't think there is an extension for this kind of code in dreamweaver.

Using Dreamweaver to set hot spot
---------------------------------

1.open any html Or Create any html page.
(File->new) and save the file htm or html.
2.Cick Insert menu ,then you click insert menu ,the open dialog has come and select the image then cilck ok,
(insert->Image.)
3.you just cilck (or) select the image. then click window menu and select the property menu ,the property dialog displayed,it has three type of mapping style shown,Rectangler ,oval and polycan ,whatever you want just click and draw the image ,when the time property box displayed link ,target and alt,
a.link->type your specified url path.
b.target->just you select the dropdown box(_blank,_self,_serach..)
c.alt->just you type tool tip
4.just you and see the codeing part they automatically Wrote the code.
5.finally you browse the file.
