I am trying to use data validation on a sheet using a list that is in another workbook. Has anyone had any success trying to do this? According to the help file, it is not possible.

The help file is right - it can't be done directly. You will need to set up some cells in the validation workbook to link across the required values and then set the data validation off the linked cells (or just keep the validation list in the validation workbook but I guess you've got good reasons as to why you're not doing that)
