Sounds in excel vba

I wanted to tart up a boring program with sound effects.
I used the "Play a wav file" routine on page 342 of 'Excel 2000 VBA' by John Green.
If I use the file open dialog in Excel to open the file, the sounds work fine.
If I click on the filename in the task pane to load it - or click on the recently opened file list - the sounds don't work.
Does anyone know what is going on?
