Default flash and graphics

Hi there

This is a lifelong problem I've always come across in flash and it's to do with importing graphics into flash and keeping the edges smooth. Whenever I import graphics in the edges of the graphic always appear jagged and untidy.

Any ideas on how to overcome this?

thanks

Adam

what format is your original graphic? what application are you using with the original graphic? are you resizing the image?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike

I'm now using jpg's or gif's as the original images having tried png's but they don't seem to help. I'm using photoshop with the original graphic and I'm trying not to resize the image in flash too much.

Cheers

Adam

Hey Adam
If the image is initially good quality when you open it in photoshop, then there are only a couple of things that would bring the quality down. The first is resizing the image to big, photoshop has to rebuild all the missing pixels, giving that pixel edge look. The second is saving the jpg or gif format at too low a setting, photoshop has a save for web function that allows you to test the quality, you might do some testing and save it a higher quality. Flash also has a jpg qulaity setting under the Publish Settings I keep mine at about 80(default). Those are the only things I can think of . If none of these solutions help let me know and I will be glad to take a look at the images.

Thanks
Mike

thanks Mike

I've already tried most of those things you mention; I save the jpg/gif at max resolution from photoshop and I don't make it any bigger in photoshop; infact I downsize it; I do keep my flash public settings at about 50 though but when I up it it increases the size of the movie too much for my liking.

what I do notice however, is that the image (this particular one) has a white kind of border round it that might be causing the problems - what do you think?

cheers

Adam

Adam
So if you post them at 80 do they still look bad? What do you mean white border? If you want you can send an image to me at [email protected] (sorry about the name) and I will have a look at them.

Thanks
Mike

Adam,

First off, there's one rule regarding sizing images you need to keep in mind. IF you are going to be doing any re-sizing of any image, do it outside of Flash. I've made the mistake of sizing stuff in Flash before so I am trying not to do it again.

Just a thought,
