How to find RGB %'s of a solid colour image

Hello, I am writing a chemical analysis application in VB.NET. The application scans a solid colour image (a square). I need to be able to determine the percentage of the Red, Green and Blue components that make up the colour (except for black or white images of course).

Can someone point me to a source code example, book, website, etc. that might help?
