How to communicate between tiers

Dear All
Basically , I am stuck with a problem.
I have database on 1 server, Middle tier(Business logic on one server) on 1 server and front end on client PCs,

Now which communication method should be employed,
Suggest the best possible method.
Remoting is quite heavy to transfer data & Web services are slow
so please suggest an alternative to it.

IF you suggest remoting then please tell how to implement security to it
