Default GUI Guildelines

Does anybody know what the standard is for the number of items in a drop list box? I see a maximum of 40 for the number of items in a list here that consultants have set as a standard. I don't this maximum limit in the MS Windows User Experience (Official Guildlines for Desingers and Developers).

I have a contract that has placed 400 items in a drop list box, which is very difficult to use. I like to him that is not the best practice.

400???!!!!!!

Jakob Nielsen advises using static lists for long dropdowns.

Personally I try only to use them for 10 or fewer items.
