CGI Prg., keep counts of Number of user visit site

Plz Anyone could tell the brief code about : "How can a CGI programme keeps count of number of users who visits web-sites?" Like, generally, as we have seen so many times that, when we enter to such sites, it displays that "you are visitor number 1100.." like that..
