Default Messaging in JAVA

Hi,
We are developing a web application using following environment:

Operating System : Windows XP
Application Server : EAServer 4.2(support JDK 1.3)
RDBMS : Adaptive Sybase Enterprise

We have a requirment in our Web application where server need to push alert messages to the logged-in web users whose session are valid.
Please suggest the best approach to complete this requirment.
