Default Setting up the path and classpath

I am a beginner at Java and am having problems getting setup. I am running XP and need to know how to set up my path and classpath. Java has been installed on my C drive and it reads: j2sdk1.4.2_10. Within this folder I found my bin folder. How should my path and classpath be setup in order for me to begin developing small programs?
