Default New to Java ( Project Manager)

Hi,

I am a Project Manager and new to Java language. I have been handling Client/Server projects till now.

Can anybody please tell me how I should start and what all things are applicable to me to learn as Project Manager.

Sandeep.

I'd say that one of the best things you could do would be to learn lots about object modelling. Once you have a grip on that you can start to get to grips with the architecture of the software you're working on and why it works like it does (or maybe how it could work better). I don't know how much coding may be involved in your project manager role, but obviously the more you know about Java the better - the Beginning java book was pretty good to give you the basics. And general guides to programming and project management would be a good idea - maybe check out the Pragmatic Programmers book?

Hi

I think, as a PM, you should concentrate more on getting awareness about things like:

1. Various frameworks widely used around java viz. Struts, Spring, Hibernate, cactus etc.
2. Varous tools being used in Java development viz. Ant, IDEs(Eclipse, IDEA IntelliJ, JBuilder etc.), JProbe, JProfiler
3. Typical problems/issues being faced in Java projects.
4. Getting right resources into Java projects and indentifying and replacing unsuitable resources from projects.
5. Typical hardware and software involved around Java projects(RAM, Application servers, Webservers, Databases etc)

Let me know if you want more information
