Form not refreshing after form validation

When I add the validation for attachments in the form, the hidden file upload controls for another set of attachments are not displayed (I'm using Javascript in web forms in Lotus Notes)- the validation seems to be performed right away causing the form not to be refreshed and the hidden controls not to be displayed. Help!
