Default add an autonumber form field on web page

We have a form on our web page and want to add an autonumber field to keep track of each separate email.
We have PHP but no CGI.
Any ideas on how to do this?

It has been suggested to grab a counter number using javascript, but is there an easier and more precise way?

Thanx!:D

A lot of this answer depends on what this autonumber is based on. For an autonumber to be useful it has to be based on something. Please provide that detail so we can give you a useful answer.
