Windows XP will very likely have anihilated the data in your linux partition. "This feature is by design" as they say in Redmond (i.e. Windows is designed to deliberately destroy data from other operating systems, whenever it is installed). Certainly the GRUB partition will have been destroyed, so you'd have to put a new one in its place, even if your Linux is still intact. Assuming Windows XP does what its predecessors did (only format as much of the disc as it needs to occupy, for itself) there may be some data from the Linux partition, which can be recovered - assuming your drive happened to be big enough. In order to see what's left, you could try booting using a Linux boot floopy, such as Kent Robotti's "Recovery is Possible" (I suggest that one, since Laptop floppy dirves often can't cope with the high density floppy format used by the likes of "Tom's Rescue Bootdisk"). Once booted, you could mount your hard drive and have a look around to see what's left. The same may also be possible using one of these live-from-the-cd distributions, such as Knoppix (
http://www.knoppix.com/), which might give you the chance to have a look around from within the comfort of a deskttop file browser, like Konqueror, but I've never tried it, so I only punt it out as a thought.
If you ever have to install Windows on a machine at all, backup all your data from any other operating system on your machine first.
Sorry for the bad news
