WinForm and Sharepoint

Hi,
I am developing a WinForm application with C# code, to synchronise the document library files between local system and WSS , I need to know :
1. How to get a list of document folders and files permissible to a user
2. How to authenticate a user ? since the user will access the Sharepoint from elsewhere, he needs to be authenticated by my application ?
