Default MS Exchange Server+Intranet: best practice?

Hello, I have a task in that I have a MS Exchange Server which is used for email (together with Outlook), file-sharing, calendar, and as address-book. I want to build an Intranet that would integrate well with MS Exchange. That means, one needs to log in just one place instead of separately into the server and the intranet; and that one's intranet profile / role could communicate with the server.

Question: Is it best to build the Intranet from scratch as an extension to the MS Exchange Server using the .NET framework or is it best to do the Intranet as a separate application (in Zope, for instance) and ensure communication with the MS server through the latter's web services?

Thanks beforehand!
